The 10 best firework lighters

Van alle modellen in onze vuurwerk aanstekers is de PyroPen Turbo voor de meeste mensen de juiste. Eén strakke jetflame, navulbaar, pen-model dat in je jaszak past en geen tien euro kost. Simpel, en hij doet het als het waait.

Wil je een bredere vlam die een dikke lont in één keer pakt, dan is de PyroTorch Quattro de logische stap: vier jetflames naast elkaar voor dezelfde prijs. Zoek je vooral afstand, kies dan een model met een lange hals.

Wat alle tien gemeen hebben: het zijn jetflames. Een gewone vlam waait uit op het moment dat je hem nodig hebt, en dan sta je met je hand boven een lont te friemelen.

Drie dingen bepalen of een aansteker die avond doorstaat, en prijs staat daar niet tussen.

Vlamtype. Een jetflame is gas onder druk dat blauw en recht brandt. Wind heeft er nauwelijks vat op. Een softflame, de gewone gele vlam, gaat bij windkracht drie al uit.

Afstand tussen je hand en de lont. Dit is het punt waar de meeste mensen niet over nadenken tot het misgaat. Een aansteker van vijf centimeter dwingt je dicht bij het vuurwerk. Een model met een lange hals zoals de Champ Tatin, of een pen-vorm als de Atomic Pen Torch, geeft je die ruimte terug.

Navulbaar of niet. Een wegwerpaansteker die halverwege leegraakt is die avond een probleem. Alle tien hieronder zijn navulbaar, en dat is bewust.

Je steekt zelf af, in je eigen tuin. PyroPen Turbo. Navulbaar, past in je jaszak, en de prijs is zo laag dat het niet erg is als hij nat wordt.

Je steekt dik vuurwerk af met stugge lonten. PyroTorch Quattro, want vier vlammen naast elkaar dekken de hele lont in één beweging.

The Eurojet Inferno is the widest of the bunch. With gloves on, that's the difference between operating it and fumbling with it, and on New Year's Eve you'll have gloves on.

The Champ High Quattro does the same as the PyroTorch Quattro for a few euros more, with a metal body. If you want one that still looks good after three years, this is the one.

The Champ Saber Lighter Pack is the same lighter as above, but several in one set. If you're out in the garden with a group, that's simply more practical than passing one around.

Finally, the Twin Lighter Pack isn't a separate model but a practical solution: two lighters in one pack. If two of you are lighting fireworks, that saves passing the one lighter back and forth all evening.

Cold. Butane turns sluggish below ten degrees. A lighter that's been outside in your coat pocket all evening ignites less easily than one that's been indoors. Warm it up in your hand for a moment.

Flame height. Don't set it to maximum. Too big a flame uses gas without giving you anything extra, and with a fuse, what matters is where you touch it, not the size of the flame.

For the vast majority of people, the PyroPen Turbo is the right choice: refillable, small enough to take with you, and priced so you can buy two without a second thought.

If you're lighting heavier fireworks, the PyroTorch Quattro is worth considering for its wider flame. And if you'd rather keep as much distance as possible between your hand and the fuse that evening, go for the Champ Tatin with its curved neck.
