How deep is the wick
For candles on a tray 17 centimetres is enough. With tall glasses, storm lanterns or a candle that is already half burnt down you want to go towards 25 to 27 centimetres, or you still will not reach it.
Bendable or fixed neck
You set a bendable neck at an angle so you aim the flame straight at the wick while your hand stays well away. A fixed stem is sturdier and nicer if you mostly use it upright.
Jet flame or soft flame
A soft flame is calmer and does not blow the wick sideways, which works nicely on thin wicks. A jet flame is fiercer and does not blow out, and that wins as soon as you are outdoors or walking down a draughty hallway.
