Long lighters for distance from the flame

You buy a long lighter for one reason: keeping your distance. At an open fireplace, a candle deep in a glass or a barbecue you want to get the flame somewhere without taking your hand along.

The models here run from about seventeen to twenty-seven centimetres, and some have a neck you can bend into an angle.

How much length do you really need?

That depends on where the flame has to go. For a candle on the table seventeen centimetres is enough. For kindling at the back of a fireplace or a candle already half burnt down in a tall glass, you will not manage with less than twenty-five without holding your hand above the flame.

Measure your deepest case

Take the most awkward spot you have, usually the fireplace or the tallest candle glass, measure the depth and add a few centimetres. That figure is your minimum.

Straight or bendable

You set a bendable neck at an angle, so you aim the flame straight at the wick while your hand stays above the rim of the glass. A straight stem is sturdier and nicer if you mostly use it upright.

Jet flame or soft flame

Outdoors and in a draught a jet flame wins, because it does not blow out. Indoors with thin candle wicks a soft flame is nicer, because it does not blow the wick sideways.

Tip

Refill with butane gas at 45 PSI and wait a minute after filling. At lower pressure the flame starts to sputter and the valve clogs up.

Buying a long lighter at PyroProducts

This category holds the models with extra reach: straight stems and bendable necks, with a jet flame or a soft flame, and virtually all refillable with butane gas.

If you mainly use it for candles, have a look at the candle lighters. If it is about the fireplace or a fire bowl, those are with the fireplace lighters.

When comparing, look at the length in centimetres, whether the neck bends, the type of flame and whether it is refillable. Which models work most pleasantly in practice is in the best long lighter for candles.

Longer is not always better. A stem of twenty-seven centimetres is unwieldy in a kitchen drawer and heavier in the hand, so do not take more length than you need.

If you have both a fireplace and candles in tall glasses, a model with a bendable neck is the safest choice. That covers both, whereas a straight stem still falls short at a candle in a glass.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a long lighter?

The models here run from about seventeen to twenty-seven centimetres. Measure the deepest spot you have to reach and add a few centimetres; that is your minimum.

What do you use a long lighter for?

For the open fireplace, a fire bowl, a barbecue and candles standing deep in a glass. Anywhere you have to get the flame somewhere without taking your hand along.

What is the advantage of a bendable neck?

You set it at an angle and aim the flame straight at the wick while your hand stays above the rim of the glass. With a straight stem you have to tilt the lighter, and then you soot up the glass.

Are long lighters refillable?

Virtually all of them. You fill them with butane gas at 45 PSI through the valve at the bottom. Check the product information per model.

Jet flame or soft flame on a long lighter?

Outdoors and in a draught a jet flame wins, because it does not blow out. Indoors with thin candle wicks a soft flame is nicer because it does not blow the wick sideways.

Is longer always better?

No. A long stem is more unwieldy in a drawer and heavier in the hand. Take the length your most awkward spot demands and no more.
