Refillable lighters you keep using for years

You buy a refillable lighter once and top it up with butane gas after that. Rechargeable means the same thing here: a lighter with a valve at the bottom onto which you press a gas can.

The difference from disposable is not only the price. A refillable model is usually built more solidly, with metal instead of thin plastic.

Which refillable lighter suits you?

A disposable lighter costs little, but you buy a handful a year and all of them end up in the bin. With a refillable model you only replace the gas. Topping up takes a few seconds and it lasts for years, as long as you fill it with clean gas.

How often do you want to refill

That depends on the tank and the number of flames. A model with four flames uses roughly four times as much per second as a single one. So a bigger tank mainly means reaching for the can less often.

Which gas fits in it

Virtually everything here runs on butane gas at 45 PSI. Gas with a lower pressure or lower purity leaves residue in the valve, and you notice that in a flame that starts to sputter.

Where a lighter wears out

Not on the tank but on the ignition. A piezo ignition clicks and works in damp conditions too; a flint is simpler but wears down. So look not only at the appearance but also at how it ignites.

Tip

Always wait a minute after topping up. The gas is still cold and there is air in the tank, which is why a filled lighter refuses to light. More about that is in our guide to refilling.

Buying a refillable lighter at PyroProducts

This category holds refillable lighters from small and compact to heavier models that stay upright. With one, two, three or four flames, with a jet flame or a soft flame, singly and in value sets.

If you are after the gas as well, you will find it at lighter gas. If it mainly has to keep burning outdoors, have a look at the storm lighters.

When comparing, look at the tank size, the type of ignition, whether the flame is adjustable and whether it has a lock. If a filled lighter still refuses, the answer is usually in lighter not working any more.

If you do not know which model, start with how often you use it. Daily use calls for a bigger tank and a sturdy ignition, lighting the odd candle does not. Only then look at the type of flame.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between refillable and rechargeable?

Nothing, they are two words for the same thing. Both mean there is a valve at the bottom onto which you press a can of butane gas to fill the tank.

How do I know whether a lighter is refillable?

Look for a small metal valve at the bottom, usually in the middle. If it is not there, it is a disposable model. Our product information always states it as well.

Which gas do you use to refill?

Butane gas at 45 PSI. Pure gas prevents residue in the valve. Hold the lighter upside down, press the can straight onto the valve and fill calmly until gas escapes.

How long does one filling last?

That depends on the tank size and the number of flames. In normal use most models get through weeks to months. Four flames use roughly four times as much gas per second as one.

Why does my lighter not work right after filling?

There is air in the tank and the gas is still cold. Wait a minute. If that does not help, let the remaining gas escape by pressing the valve briefly and refill.

Does a refillable lighter really last for years?

Usually yes. Wear is in the ignition, not in the tank. Fill it with clean gas, do not keep the flame at its highest setting, and store it dry.
